SUMMARY:Almost Total Lunar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:The lunar eclipse on this evening just misses being considered a total eclipse\, but 96% of the moon’s surface will be in the Earth shadow.  If there are no clouds in front of the moon\, the Middle Georgia Astronomical Society will have telescopes available to view the eclipse (if the sky is cloudy\, there will be no observing\, but the following activities will still take place).  A live broadcast of the eclipse from other locations around the world will be shown and reoccurring programs in the Mark Smith Planetarium will describe what causes eclipses.  Feel free to come in your family-friendly pajamas with a pillow and view the eclipse while laying on bean bags\, weather permitting!\n\nEntrance for this event will be through the planetarium door on the east side of the building.  The museum will be closed and only the planetarium and observatory will be open. Admission by Donation.

DESCRIPTION:10 a.m. – 12 p.m. First Saturday Monthly (weather permitting)\nFree (museum admission NOT included)\n\nThe Middle Georgia Astronomical Society (MGAS) will offer safe views of the sun through the Thompson Solar Telescope\, which is a research-grade specially filtered refractor recently donated to the museum.  See the sun’s dynamic surface and view any sunspots\, prominences\, or flares which may be occurring at the time.  Learn a little about our dynamic sun and space observatories that study it.\n\nIf there are clouds in front of the sun\, this event will be canceled\, so check the sky conditions.  After each program\, MGAS will have its general meetings\, and the public is welcome to attend for free.  These events do not include admission to the museum\, which can be purchased separately.

Join Macon Little Theatre’s Family Series in the Museum of Arts & Sciences Amphitheater on Saturday\, September 5th for The Percy Jackson Experience. This free admission\, 30-minute stage show will perform three times as part of the Museum’s STEAM Event. The amphitheater show will feature a cast of 17 on stage followed by actor encounter adventures around the performance space with additional appearances by characters from MLT’s upcoming production of Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief. DESCRIPTION:MAS will partner with the Fractal Foundation (Albuquerque\, NM) to present these innovative art-infused science experiences in the planetarium which immerse audiences in flights through fractal animations (or complex\, never-ending geometric patterns that repeat at different scales). Each experience is unique and showcases repeating patterns of fractals that have been augmented with dramatic flight movements and dynamic color cycling – plus live presenters offering information about the mathematical formulas that define fractals occurring in nature\, from the growth of the tiniest plant up to the shapes of galaxies!\nThe 6 p.m. performance is for family audiences and describe what fractals are and where they can be found. The 7:15 p.m. showing will be “Fractals Rock\,” which is a more experiential production.

DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Arts and Sciences is kicking off a Lecture Performance Series titled “The Art of Science”! Come learn about the Sciences through Art! You might find they rely on each other more than you thought! This series is for all ages\, but is specifically for our life-long learners who want to learn something new! You will not want to miss this program on November 4th at 7 p.m.! \nMary Edna Fraser fills Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences with her signature large scale batiks on silk in Above\, Between\, Below—depicting breathtaking perspectives of space\, earth\, and deep sea. The ambitious exhibition bridges cutting-edge scholarship and the ancient art of batik—a technique of hand-dyeing fabrics by using removable wax as a dye resist. Working closely with collaborators Ted Maxwell (Planetary Scientist Emeritus\, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum)\, Orrin H. Pilkey (Geology Professor Emeritus\, Duke University) and Cindy Lee Van Dover (Biologist\, Past Director of the Duke Marine Lab)\, the artist has drawn upon their insights to create images that bring the grandeur of distant landscapes near to us.
