The Museum of Arts and Sciences, Macon, Georgia, in partnership with Wonderspaces, presents On a Human Scale by Matthew Matthew from February 2025 to July 2025. This interactive, immersive experience is installed in the Burgess Gallery at the right of the museum lobby. The WonderSpaces partnership is underwritten through a generous contribution by the Knight Foundation.
On a Human Scale is an ongoing installation intended to create a fully playable instrument of humanity. To engage participants, Matthew Matthew filmed hundreds of people in New York City, from all different walks of life, asking each to participate. Their individual notes are woven into a fully interactive video installation that the public is invited to play, using a harpsichord. The project started as a two-octave prototype using a toy piano and has grown to 49 keys housed in an antique harpsichord. The piece has been developed in Guadalajara, Mexico, and New York City, chronicling voices from around the world into melodic scales and percussive instruments.
The artist was inspired to create this piece while walking through Shanghai listening to Philip Glass’ “Einstein on the Beach.” Matthew recognized humanity as an interworking instrument, where each of us is a note.
Matthew hopes On a Human Scale will continue to grow, creating instruments of people from all different backgrounds and walks of life.
On a Human Scale debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014.
