Macon Film Festival continues this Fall with the world’s best Full Dome Film at MAS
From vibrantly animated films for kids and cutting-edge science experiences to the world’s most extreme
boundary-pushing artistic content, the 2023 Macon Film Festival will present its immersive Full Dome Film
category on October 12, 13, and 14. Screenings at the Museum of Arts and Sciences will include 34
immersive full dome films representing 18 countries.
“We’re especially excited to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the release of Pink Floyd’s iconic album
‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ with a feature presentation – 42 minutes of music in surround sound set
against a stunning graphic score of the solar system and beyond,” said Susan Welsh MAS Executive
Director. “For those struggling to fit all these screenings in, we recommend the Night of Immersive on
Thursday, October 12th, that will include Pink Floyd, our annually curated Art Immersive Showcase, plus
a live VJ experience under the dome.”
Inspired by an art-infused science focus, the Museum of Arts and Sciences (MAS) established its
partnership with the Macon Film Festival in 2017. By partnering with an independent film festival, the
MAS is welcoming artistic professionals into a space often reserved for the teaching of science. This
festival supports the creation of new artistic content by providing exhibition opportunities and technical
workshops for students, artists, and filmmakers wanting to create multimedia experiences for full dome
venues.
“2023 marks the 6th annual year of this exciting partnership,” said Welsh. “We’re proud to offer an
accomplished international juried competition resulting in three days of in-person screenings and cash
awards. Increasing access to the full dome projection technology, encouraging filmmakers to experiment
with this medium, and growing an audience all are goals we’re achieving.” Included in this year’s line-up
are 6 films created by artists in Germany and 4 from Canada (two countries leading the art form), plus a
number of immersive experiences by new collectives, female directors, and emerging film professionals.
In past years, noteworthy “firsts” featured in the festival included the first full dome film produced in
Argentina (“Adventures of Claws & Green”), the first Japanese Butoh performance art immersive
adaptation (“Hiruko”), and the world’s first full-length feature documentary created for a full dome
projection surface (“Indirect Actions”). In 2022, the innovative “Partita for 8 Voices,” an a cappella
composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning American Composer Caroline Shaw performed by the vocal
ensemble Roomful of Teeth, won Best Immersive Experience. This year, the “One Sky Project”
joins the list of firsts for its collaborative production and storytelling. The project leverages an international
team of filmmakers, artists, and experts focused on increasing understanding about cultural and
indigenous astronomy, its historical and modern applications, and how our one sky connects us all.
“Excellent Family Fun blocks on Saturday morning, as always,” said Welsh. Three blocks will be offered
during the festival with new films for kids including: “Hazel Nuts In Search of the Perfect Planet,”
“Grandpa & Zoe Mission Light,” “Once Upon… My Story,” “3-2-1 Lift Off!,” “We Are Guardians,” and more.
The full dome festival kicks off Thursday (Oct 12th) at 10:30AM with a special screening of “Bebe
Symphonique,” a 9-minute immersive experience created for infants 0-18 months.
