About the Artist: Alfred Conteh
Georgia-based Artist Alfred Conteh explores how African diasporal societies in the South are fighting social, economic, educational, and psychological wars from within and without to survive. Through the stunning realism of his large-scale paintings, Conteh presents both the honest and false narratives of history personified in colossal patina-covered figures that commemorate the people, cultures, and battles that these populations have fought and continue to fight. “We are at war on two fronts,” he explained.
A significant goal of the artist is for his work to be a vehicle for thought and change. Conteh grew up in Fort Valley, Georgia, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hampton University in 1997 and a Master of Fine Arts from Georgia Southern University in 2004. He lives and works in Atlanta, has exhibited extensively across the state, and is represented in numerous private and institutional collections.
