Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the most common and largest species of hawks in North America. They are frequently seen soaring in the sky, since it requires less effort than flapping their wings. Red-Tailed Hawks are found in most of North and Central America. They can be found in open fields, woodlands, prairies, mountains, and even on roadsides. On average, red-tailed hawks travel at 40 miles per hour, but if they are diving to catch prey, they can reach up to 120 miles per hour!
