Art of Science: The Ancient Art of Batiks

November 4 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$5.00

The Museum of Arts and Sciences is kicking off a Lecture Performance Series titled “The Art of Science”! Come learn about the Sciences through Art! You might find they rely on each other more than you thought! This series is for all ages, but is specifically for our life-long learners who want to learn something new! You will not want to miss this program on November 4th at 7 p.m.!

Mary Edna Fraser fills Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences with her signature large scale batiks on silk in Above, Between, Below—depicting breathtaking perspectives of space, earth, and deep sea. The ambitious exhibition bridges cutting-edge scholarship and the ancient art of batik—a technique of hand-dyeing fabrics by using removable wax as a dye resist. Working closely with collaborators Ted Maxwell (Planetary Scientist Emeritus, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum), Orrin H. Pilkey (Geology Professor Emeritus, Duke University) and Cindy Lee Van Dover (Biologist, Past Director of the Duke Marine Lab), the artist has drawn upon their insights to create images that bring the grandeur of distant landscapes near to us. Viewers will develop a greater sense of our place in the universe!

Don’t miss all the exciting happenings at the Museum this fall! Be sure to check the Events page on the Museum’s website and keep up with us on social media for more information!

This event is included in the Museum’s General Admission Ticket or will be $5 at the door. It is FREE for Museum Members!
